The DFFE has warned that the illegal collection and trafficking of parrot eggs pose a serious threat to wild bird populations and animal welfare.

The DFFE has warned that such eggs are often smuggled in improvised incubators and in conditions that endanger the welfare of developing embryos and hatchlings.

“Illegal wildlife trafficking can only be challenged by a coordinated defense of our natural heritage,” said Environment Minister David Maynier, congratulating the agencies involved in the arrest. He particularly thanked the dedicated staff at the National Zoological Garden in Pretoria, who have been working tirelessly to incubate the seized eggs and provide specialized care to the hatchlings.
