The Mezzetta recall behind it
On September 26, 2026, G. L. Mezzetta Inc. of American Canyon, California, announced a voluntary recall of one lot of Mezzetta Golden Greek Peperoncini, Medium Heat, in 32-ounce glass jars — SKU 10106328, lot 720106. The FDA’s recall listing gives the reason as a product that may contain foreign objects, specifically a pest contaminant in the jar.
The company says it became aware of a video circulating on social media that showed what it calls a potential pest contaminant in a jar. The video, posted on TikTok on September 16, showed what the consumer described as a dead mouse in a jar of the peppers. Mezzetta has not confirmed that description, and the official record says “potential pest contaminant” until the company finishes examining the jar.
Mezzetta said it contacted the consumer, asked to retrieve and examine the jar, and is reviewing its production, sanitation and food-safety records. No other Mezzetta products or lots are included, and the company says it has received no reports of illness or injury. More stories on food safety appear in Watan News’ Food section.

How one jar triggered two recalls
WinCo says Mezzetta notified it that the recalled lot might have been used as an ingredient on its deli trays. The company stressed that it never had or used any jars showing evidence of pests, saw no pests during production, and has received no complaints about pests or illness tied to its trays.
The recall was initiated with the FDA’s knowledge anyway, citing transparency with customers and food safety. Every tray that may have been made with the peperoncini has been removed from WinCo stores. Because the trays are short-shelf-life deli items, the company says the affected product is unlikely to still be in consumers’ refrigerators.
What consumers should do
Shoppers in the eight affected states should check for the two WinCo trays with Best If Used By dates from Aug. 14 through Sept. 25, 2026. Any trays past that date range should be discarded rather than eaten.
Anyone holding a 32-ounce jar of Mezzetta Golden Greek Peperoncini Medium Heat should check the lot code: lot 720106 should not be eaten, and consumers can contact Mezzetta at CustomerSupport@Mezzetta.com.
