Netflix Leadership Shakeup Deepens as Film Chief Dan Lin Exits Before Q3 Earnings

Netflix Leadership Shakeup Deepens as Film Chief Dan Lin Exits Before Q3 Earnings
Share this story

The Netflix leadership shakeup deepened on Monday as film division head Dan Lin left the company after nearly three years in the role, marking a second senior executive departure in less than a week. The move follows the exit of chief content officer Bela Bajaria, roughly 1,000 layoffs, and a stock slide of more than 40% over the past year — all landing just ahead of Netflix’s third-quarter earnings report, due after markets close on Tuesday.

FAKTA

  • Film chief Dan Lin left Netflix on Monday after nearly three years at the helm of the film division.
  • Chief content officer Bela Bajaria departed last week after nearly a decade; former Disney executive Peter Rice replaces her and takes over on 26 October.
  • Netflix laid off about 1,000 employees, roughly 6% of its workforce — its largest staff reduction since 2022.
  • The company’s stock has fallen more than 40% over the past 12 months amid slowing engagement growth.
  • Netflix reports third-quarter results on Tuesday, with analysts expecting $0.82 earnings per share and $12.87 billion in revenue.

Reuters reported that Lin, one of the producers of “Sherlock Holmes” and the Lego movies and a former Warner Bros Pictures executive, was leaving the streamer. During his tenure he oversaw “KPop Demon Hunters”, which became a breakout hit for Netflix and won an Academy Award, bolstering the streamer’s feature animation strategy.

Bajaria Out, Rice In: The Reshuffle So Far

The company announced on Thursday that content chief Bela Bajaria would leave after nearly a decade with the streaming platform, where she rose from head of unscripted in 2016 to the top creative job in January 2023, overseeing a content budget of roughly $20 billion and global hits including “Squid Game”, “Wednesday”, “Bridgerton” and “Stranger Things”. She will be replaced by Peter Rice, the former Disney and Fox executive, effective 26 October. Rice will also oversee the films division until a new head is announced.

The shakeup landed just one day after Netflix told staff it was cutting roughly 1,000 jobs — about 6% of its workforce and its biggest layoff round since 2022. Wall Street is now looking to Tuesday’s earnings report and the conference call by co-CEOs Ted Sarandos and Greg Peters for a sense of where the streaming giant is headed.

Engagement Slump Fuels the Netflix Leadership Shakeup

The leadership changes come amid concerns over slowing viewer engagement. According to Puck, engagement at Netflix grew just 2% in the first half of 2026, while Nielsen measured Netflix at 7.8% of connected TV viewing in July against 14.2% for YouTube. Sarandos recently conceded the company is “not growing as fast as I want us to”.

Netflix is also contending with competition from free, ad-supported streaming platforms led by YouTube, as well as the growing popularity of social video. Its costly, ill-fated pursuit of Warner Bros. added to investor anxiety and contributed to the stock’s 40% decline over the past year.

Conclusion

With both its top content executive and its film chief gone within days and a major layoff round behind it, Netflix enters Tuesday’s earnings call at a genuine inflection point. Investors will be watching whether the new leadership under Peter Rice can restart engagement growth and steady a stock that has lost more than 40% of its value — or whether the streaming pioneer’s toughest chapter is still ahead.
