Rubio Urges Russia and Ukraine to End the War From Central Asia

Rubio Urges Russia and Ukraine to End the War From Central Asia
Share this story

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio used a weekend visit to Central Asia to press Russia and Ukraine to end their four-year war. Rubio urges end to Ukraine war, telling reporters in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, that both sides should be focused on bringing the fighting to a close rather than letting it grind on.

FAKTA

  • Who: US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, during a visit to Samarkand, Uzbekistan
  • What: Urged Russia and Ukraine to focus on ending their four-year war
  • Where: Samarkand, at a meeting of the C5+1 diplomatic group with the foreign ministers of Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan
  • Why it matters: Rubio warned the conflict could spill over borders if failed sabotage operations or stray drones hit a neighbouring country
  • Background: Washington is pursuing talks with Moscow and Kyiv while overnight Russian strikes on Kyiv killed a woman and damaged a residential building

Rubio Urges End to Ukraine War From Samarkand

Rubio landed in Samarkand on Sunday night for the C5+1 ministerial session, a grouping that brings the United States together with the five Central Asian states. Speaking to journalists, he said the administration wants the war finished and was continuing its diplomatic efforts with both capitals.

Asked whether a possible meeting involving US President Donald Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese leader Xi Jinping had been arranged to negotiate an end to the conflict, Rubio said he did not know whether the meeting had been finalised. He added that Trump has been clear that he wants the war over.

Trump has recently clinched a diesel import arrangement with Russia and waived some US sanctions on Moscow, moves he said are intended to keep the Kremlin at the negotiating table. Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has criticised those steps, underlining the distance still between the two sides.

Warning on Escalation Risk

Rubio cautioned that the war carries a real danger of spreading beyond Ukraine. He pointed to the risk of failed sabotage attacks or drones thrown off course by electronic warfare wandering into a neighbouring country, which could create new security crises. His remarks reflect Washington’s view that every additional month of fighting raises the chance of an unintended confrontation.

Diplomacy Continues as Kyiv Endures New Strikes

The diplomatic push comes against a grim backdrop. An overnight Russian air strike on Kyiv killed a woman, hit a subway station and damaged a 25-storey residential building, according to reports. Civilians remain exposed to danger while negotiators try to find common ground.

Rubio has not visited Kyiv or Moscow since becoming secretary of state, and the diplomatic legwork has largely been carried by special envoys. The coming weeks will show whether renewed engagement can move the two sides closer to a settlement or whether the fighting simply continues.
