One crew member has died and a second remains missing after a French Air Force fighter jet crashed in northeastern France on Tuesday evening, France’s Ministry of the Armed Forces confirmed on Wednesday.
The two-seat Mirage 2000D went down in the Meurthe-et-Moselle region with two people on board, the ministry said. One person was killed in the crash, while the second crew member was still unaccounted for as rescue teams searched the area through the night and into Wednesday.
FAKTA
- Aircraft: Mirage 2000D, a two-seat ground-attack jet of the French Air and Space Force
- Location: Meurthe-et-Moselle, northeastern France, near the Nancy-Ochey air base
- Time: Around 10:30 p.m. local time on Tuesday, 20 October 2026
- On board: Two crew members
- Casualties: One dead, one missing
- Cause: Under investigation
Night flight ends in tragedy
The jet was returning to Nancy-Ochey Air Base after a nighttime training mission when it lost radio and radar contact during its final approach late on Tuesday night. Residents in the area reported hearing a loud explosion and seeing a fireball fall from the sky near Pont-à-Mousson, shortly before emergency services were alerted.
Search teams located debris from the aircraft in fields and woodland early on Wednesday morning, along with the body of one crew member. The body was recovered from the crash site and was awaiting formal identification.
Reports said the crew consisted of a young pilot in training and an experienced weapon systems officer. An air force spokesman told French media that at least one of the crew was unable to eject from the aircraft, but cautioned that it was far too early to draw any conclusions about what went wrong.
Search under way for second crew member
Military teams, gendarmes and local firefighters joined the search overnight, supported by a rescue helicopter fitted with thermal imaging equipment. A command post was set up near the village of Rogéville, close to where the wreckage was found, and teams searched an area of around 15 kilometres around Pont-à-Mousson for the missing crew member.
The operation continued through Wednesday under difficult weather conditions, with crews combing fields and woodland between Rogéville, Tremblecourt and Domèvre-en-Haye. Officials have not released the identities of the two crew members.
Investigation to establish the cause
France’s defence ministry said the cause of the crash was under investigation. Investigators will examine the wreckage and the available flight evidence to establish what led to the accident, and officials are expected to release further details as the inquiry progresses.
The Mirage 2000D is a long-serving ground-attack aircraft in the French Air and Space Force fleet, based at Nancy-Ochey in the country’s northeast. The crash has drawn fresh attention to the risks of night military flying, even for experienced crews on routine training missions.
