Britain will deploy Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter jets to Saudi Arabia on defensive counter-air missions, expanding military support as Houthi missile and drone attacks intensify, London announced on Tuesday, October 20, 2026. The UK Typhoon jets Saudi Arabia mission will focus on protecting Saudi cities and critical infrastructure from aerial attack, with officials stressing the aircraft will not be used for strikes against Houthi targets in Yemen.

Defence Secretary Wes Streeting confirmed the deployment in a written statement. “The continuing attacks from the Houthis on our ally Saudi Arabia are absolutely despicable,” he said. “The targeting of the airport in Riyadh in particular shows the lengths the Houthis are going to escalate the situation in the region.” Read more international news on Watan News.

FAKTA: UK Typhoon Jets Saudi Arabia Deployment

  • What: RAF Typhoon fighter jets deployed to Saudi Arabia for defensive counter-air missions.
  • Announced: Tuesday, October 20, 2026, by Defence Secretary Wes Streeting.
  • Also included: One RAF A400M Atlas transport aircraft, military advisers for Saudi staff officers, and extended air-to-air refuelling support.
  • Scope: Strictly defensive — no offensive strikes against Houthi targets, according to the UK government.
  • Context: Months of intensifying Houthi missile and drone attacks on Saudi targets, including King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh.

Riyadh Airport in the Crosshairs

The immediate trigger was a wave of Houthi attacks on the Saudi capital and its energy infrastructure. King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh has come under repeated attack this month, a development London described as a serious escalation by the Iran-backed group. The new package builds on British equipment and personnel already stationed in the country to counter Houthi air attacks.

Britain had already stepped up assistance in September with an RAF Voyager refuelling aircraft after a fresh round of Houthi strikes. The new package extends that refuelling support by a further 90 days and adds the fighter jets, the A400M transport plane to move equipment, and advisers who will support Saudi staff officers.

Wider Gulf Tensions

The move comes amid rising confrontation across the region. The Houthis have intensified attacks on Saudi Arabia in recent weeks, firing ballistic missiles and drones at airports and energy facilities in response to the kingdom’s backing of the Yemeni government. The group has also tightened its hold over the Bab al-Mandab strait, the narrow Red Sea chokepoint through which much Europe-bound shipping passes via the Suez Canal.

London framed the deployment partly in terms of its own interests, saying it was in the United Kingdom’s national economic and security interest to help contain the destabilisation. Officials warned the deepening crisis could disrupt energy supplies and add to cost pressures for British households and businesses.

What Comes Next

The timeline for the jets’ arrival has not been disclosed. Officials said the Typhoons would patrol Saudi airspace and protect cities and critical infrastructure, remaining defensive throughout. The move adds a new British military footprint to an already tense Gulf, where US-Iran friction and repeated strikes on commercial and energy targets keep the region on edge.
