Russian drones killed two people near Ukraine’s second-largest city, Kharkiv, during overnight attacks, regional governor Oleh Syniehubov said on Wednesday, 21 October. Eleven more people were treated for shock and stress reactions after drones struck private homes and damaged property nearby, he said on Telegram. The deaths came as Russian attacks also hit the capital, Kyiv, and the central city of Kremenchuk.

FAKTA: Overnight strikes in Ukraine

  • What happened: Overnight Russian drone and air attacks hit the Kharkiv region, Kyiv and Kremenchuk on 21 October 2026.
  • Near Kharkiv: Two killed, eleven treated for stress reactions; private homes hit and damaged.
  • In Kyiv: An airstrike hit a multi-storey residential building and transport infrastructure, starting fires, according to Mayor Vitalii Klitschko.
  • In Kremenchuk: A strike on a university in the Poltava region injured two people, local authorities said.
  • Diplomatic backdrop: United States envoy Steve Witkoff was due to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday, a day after talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy in Norway.

Overnight strikes in Ukraine hit three regions

In the Kharkiv region, the drones struck homes in communities around the city, killing two residents and leaving others shaken. Governor Syniehubov said eleven people suffered stress reactions in the attack, which also caused damage beyond the homes directly hit. Officials did not immediately give further details about the victims.

In Kyiv, the strike on a residential building and transport facilities set off fires in the capital, Mayor Klitschko said on Telegram. Authorities did not immediately report casualties there or give a full account of the damage.

Further south, in Kremenchuk in the Poltava region, a university was struck and two people were injured, local authorities said. No further details about the condition of the building were immediately released. Taken together, the three incidents pointed to a night of attacks spread across the north-east, the centre and the capital.

Diplomacy continues amid the attacks

The fresh strikes came on the day US envoy Steve Witkoff was scheduled to meet President Putin in Russia. A US official said Witkoff had held constructive talks with President Zelenskiy in Norway on Tuesday. Officials disclosed no detailed account of either discussion, and no outcome had been announced.

The sequence of meetings kept diplomatic contact open even as drones and missiles continued to hit Ukrainian cities. Washington has pressed both sides to move towards an end to the war, but the latest attacks showed how far apart fighting on the ground and talking at the table remain.

Civilians bear the cost

For residents, the overnight attacks brought the war back to homes, a university and city transport links rather than to military targets alone. The deaths near Kharkiv, the injuries in Kremenchuk and the fires in Kyiv showed the range of harm in a single night: lives lost, people injured, others left in shock, and buildings damaged.

Ukrainian authorities were assessing the impact of the strikes, and officials cautioned that fuller details could follow. More international news is available on Watan News.
