Winter Sun Seaside and Island Escapes: From the Maldives to Santorini and Bali
Share this story

When the days shorten and the cold settles in, the world’s great seaside and island escapes offer a different kind of light: warm water, open horizons and slow, salt-air days. This guide brings together the finest winter-sun shores, from the Indian Ocean to the Mediterranean and the Caribbean, with rich detail on what to see, why each place is special, and how to make the most of a visit.

FAKTA

  • This is a themed guide to seaside and island escapes for late autumn and winter sun.
  • Destinations span the Maldives, Santorini, Bali, the Amalfi Coast, the Algarve, Barbados and Zanzibar.
  • Each destination is chosen for warm water, natural beauty, heritage and food.
  • Best season for most of these escapes is November to April, when the northern winter is at its coldest.

The Maldives: barefoot luxury on a turquoise lagoon

The Maldives remains the benchmark for island escape. More than a thousand coral islands are scattered across the Indian Ocean, and the classic image — a white sandbank ringed by a lagoon in every shade of blue — is not an exaggeration. Snorkelling over house reefs brings turtles, rays and reef fish within metres of the shore, while sandbank picnics, dolphin cruises at sunset and spa treatments in overwater pavilions complete the picture. The key highlight is the sheer clarity of the water: on a calm morning the lagoon looks almost transparent, and the horizon seems to dissolve into sky.

Santorini: white villages above a volcanic caldera

Santorini is the Mediterranean’s great panorama. The island is the rim of a flooded volcanic caldera, and its villages of whitewashed houses and blue domes cling to cliffs hundreds of metres above the sea. Oia at sunset is justly famous, but the quieter pleasures last longer: black-sand beaches at Kamari, wine tasting in Santo Wines’ cliffside terraces, a walk along the caldera path from Fira to Oia, and the ancient streets of Akrotiri, preserved under volcanic ash. In winter the island is calmer, the light is softer, and the views are uninterrupted.

Bali: island of temples, rice terraces and surf

Bali pairs beach life with a living culture. In the south, Seminyak and Canggu offer long surf beaches and sunset dining, while Ubud in the interior is a world of emerald rice terraces, jungle valleys and temples where daily offerings of flowers are still laid out each morning. Uluwatu Temple, perched on a cliff above the Indian Ocean, hosts sunset performances of the Kecak fire dance. For nature lovers, the Tegalalang rice terraces and the waterfalls of the island’s north are essential, and the island’s warm hospitality is part of the experience itself.

The Amalfi Coast: cliffs, lemons and old towns

Italy’s Amalfi Coast is a place, not just a view: pastel villages stacked above the Tyrrhenian Sea, lemon groves scenting the air, and coastal roads that turn every drive into a panorama. Positano’s steep lanes lead down to a pebbled beach, Ravello’s gardens look out over the whole coastline, and Amalfi town itself holds a magnificent Arab-Norman cathedral. Boat trips to hidden coves and the island of Capri, with its Blue Grotto, are the best way to see the coast from the water.

The Algarve, Barbados and Zanzibar

Portugal’s Algarve offers golden cliffs, sea caves at Benagil and long Atlantic beaches, with fishing villages such as Carvoeiro and Tavira providing a slower pace. Barbados, in the Caribbean, combines powder-white west-coast beaches with the wild Atlantic surf of Bathsheba on the east coast, plus a rich food culture and the historic streets of Bridgetown. Zanzibar, off the coast of Tanzania, is an island of spice farms, the coral-white beaches of Nungwi and Paje, and Stone Town, a UNESCO-listed old town of carved doors, spice markets and Swahili, Arab and Indian influences.

Planning your escape

Travel light, book sea-facing rooms early for the winter months, and leave room in the itinerary for unplanned days: the best island moments are often the simplest — a morning swim before breakfast, a walk along the shore at dusk, a meal of freshly caught fish in a family-run restaurant. Respect local customs, protect coral reefs by choosing reef-safe sunscreen, and travel with the seasons: November to April suits the Maldives, the Caribbean and Zanzibar best, while the Mediterranean shines from spring into early autumn.
