BERLIN: The World Health Summit 2026 opened in Berlin on 11 October, bringing together more than 4,000 participants from 130 countries in person and tens of thousands more online for three days of debate on the future of global health — with climate-related health threats placed firmly on the agenda.

The annual flagship event runs until 13 October under the leitmotif “From Crisis to Resilience: Innovating for Health”. According to the World Health Summit, leaders and changemakers from politics, science, the private sector and civil society are taking part, alongside youth voices and emerging experts, to address the world’s most pressing health challenges and advance innovative solutions.

FAKTA: World Health Summit 2026

  • What: World Health Summit 2026 — the annual global health summit in Berlin
  • When: 11–13 October 2026
  • Where: Berlin, Germany, with tens of thousands joining online
  • Who: More than 4,000 participants from 130 countries — leaders from politics, science, the private sector and civil society
  • Theme: “From Crisis to Resilience: Innovating for Health”
  • Climate link: Climate-related health threats are a central agenda item, alongside pandemic preparedness and resilient health systems

What is on the agenda at the World Health Summit 2026

The summit’s programme covers a broad set of global health challenges. Alongside climate-related health threats, discussions address Ebola and other infectious diseases, antibiotic resistance, pandemic preparedness, and building resilient health systems. Health care in conflict settings, including Ukraine, is also on the agenda, as is leadership of the World Health Organization — a conversation with prospective candidates for the next WHO Director-General is scheduled during the summit.

Climate and health on the same stage

The presence of climate on a health agenda reflects a growing recognition that climate change is also a health crisis. Session materials for the summit’s Global Health Lab note that health systems contribute an estimated 4.4 percent of global net emissions, while at the same time facing growing pressure from climate-driven disease burdens, extreme weather events and supply chain disruptions. The session explores how innovation in policy and partnerships can speed up the move toward low-carbon, climate-resilient health systems.

Announcements at the opening press conference

At the summit’s official press conference, UNFPA Executive Director Diene Keita highlighted a landmark investment by the Government of Bangladesh — 250 million euros for women’s health, supported by the European Investment Bank. Meanwhile, Wellcome CEO John-Arne Røttingen launched the Wellcome Global Monitor 2026, which shows that trust in science has fallen since the COVID-19 pandemic.

World Health Summit President Axel R. Pries said global health progress is being tested by overlapping crises: “To build resilient, effective, and equitable health systems, we need innovation across biomedicine and technology, financing, delivery, and political coordination.” He added that partnership and trust within and beyond the health sector lie at the heart of the summit’s theme.

Why this summit matters for climate policy

For climate observers, the summit’s climate-health programming is another signal that adaptation finance and health resilience are moving closer together in the international agenda. With the UN climate conference COP31 set for Antalya from 9 to 20 November 2026, health-and-climate sessions in Berlin may help shape what negotiators discuss there. More on the international climate agenda is available on Watan News’s climate news page.

The summit continues until 13 October. Outcomes and closing statements will follow when the programme concludes.
