Iran Claims It Shot Down a US MQ-9 Drone Over the Strait of Hormuz

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed on Tuesday morning that it had intercepted and destroyed an American MQ-9 drone over the Strait of Hormuz, in the latest escalation of claims around the ongoing US-Iran conflict. The claim, carried by Iran’s state broadcaster IRIB and reported by multiple international outlets, has not been independently verified, and Washington had issued no confirmation by the time of publication.

FAKTA

  • What happened: The IRGC said its air defences intercepted and destroyed a US MQ-9 drone over the Strait of Hormuz early on Tuesday, October 20, 2026.
  • Source of the claim: An IRGC statement carried by Iran’s state broadcaster IRIB; the semi-official Fars news agency described it as the 54th such drone Iran says it has brought down.
  • Status: The downing claim is unverified. No independent confirmation exists, and the United States has not commented on the claim.
  • Wider pressure: President Donald Trump said Washington is continuing to hit Iran economically and militarily. Iran warned that undersea communication cables through the Strait could be targeted, and the IMO said about 6,000 sailors remain trapped in the waterway.

Iran US drone Hormuz claim comes amid sharp rhetoric

According to the IRGC statement, the drone was brought down by an advanced air defence system operated by the IRGC’s aerospace force as part of Iran’s integrated air defence network. The Tasnim news agency, which is close to the IRGC, published the claim at 06:43 UTC on Tuesday, calling it the 54th US MQ-9 drone destroyed over the Strait.

The claim surfaced as President Donald Trump declared that the United States is continuing to pressure Iran both economically and militarily. Trump also praised Russian President Vladimir Putin for staying out of the conflict, while claiming that Iran’s navy and hundreds of its fighter jets had been destroyed or disabled — battlefield assertions that were not independently verified.

Undersea cables and shipping in the crosshairs

IRGC spokesman Brigadier-General Hossein Mohebbi warned that undersea communication cables running through the Strait of Hormuz could be targeted if US attacks threatened Iran’s regional security. He said seven major cables passed through the strait, carrying much of the world’s internet and commercial data, and warned: “If the region becomes insecure for Iran, then there will be no security in the region.”

Iran’s Persian Gulf Strait Authority said it had added 122 vessels to a “non-conformity list” tracking ships that violate its protocols for transiting the waterway. More than 40 commercial vessels had been contacted, 19 were negotiating to avoid being listed or to secure removal, two had been removed after fulfilling their obligations, and around 30 more could be added if they failed to respond to notices.

Meanwhile, the International Maritime Organization’s secretary-general, Arsenio Dominguez, said about 6,000 sailors remained trapped in the Strait of Hormuz since the conflict began. He warned that vessels had come under repeated attack and that seafarers had continued to die.

Diplomacy and war costs in the background

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Tehran and Moscow were strengthening their relationship following talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Tehran on Monday. The discussions covered regional conflicts and plans to expand economic and nuclear cooperation, according to Araghchi.

In Washington, five Democratic senators led by Elizabeth Warren called on the Pentagon to disclose the full cost of the war, including damage to US military bases and repair expenses. The military had estimated the conflict cost at $43.6 billion through September 3, excluding damage to bases and facilities hit by Iranian strikes.

Oil prices edged lower in early trading on Tuesday after Trump authorised waivers on certain sanctions and tariffs affecting Russian energy exports. Brent crude fell 0.45 percent to $109.06 a barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate crude for November delivery dropped 0.33 percent to $103.32.
