CD Tenerife striker Jesus de Miguel has died at the age of 30, a day after suffering a cardiac arrest following a collision during a Spanish second-division match. His club announced his death on Tuesday morning, 3 November 2026, bringing a sombre end to a night of hope that he would recover.

Jesus de Miguel, known in full as Jesus de Miguel Alameda, had been taken to hospital in intensive care after the incident on Monday evening. Tenerife said on Monday night that he was stable, given the seriousness of his condition, but in the early hours of Tuesday the club reported that his condition had worsened neurologically. At 8am on Tuesday, the club confirmed he had died.

FAKTA: Jesus de Miguel dies aged 30

  • Match: Tenerife against FC Andorra, Segunda Division, Monday 2 November 2026, score 2-2 when abandoned
  • Incident: Collision in stoppage time with Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono, who was sent off
  • Hospital: Hospital Universitario Nuestra Senora de Candelaria, Santa Cruz, Tenerife
  • Death announced: Tuesday 3 November 2026, at 8am local time, by CD Tenerife
  • Response: The Royal Spanish Football Federation postponed all matches scheduled for Tuesday, including Copa del Rey and Copa de la Reina fixtures

What happened to Jesus de Miguel

The match at Tenerife was in stoppage time, with the score level at 2-2, when de Miguel chased a long ball forward near the halfway line. Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono had raced a long way out of his goal to clear the ball and collided with the striker, striking him in the chest with his knee.

Owono was shown a straight red card for the challenge. Medical staff treated de Miguel on the pitch for several minutes before he was taken to hospital by ambulance, and the referee abandoned the match seven minutes into stoppage time.

Reports from the club and from Spanish media said de Miguel suffered a cardiac arrest and was resuscitated by paramedics before being admitted to intensive care in Santa Cruz. Tenerife kept supporters updated through the night, first describing him as stable despite the severity of his condition, then reporting the neurological deterioration that preceded Tuesday morning’s announcement.

Jesus de Miguel Tenerife striker dies - floodlit football stadium at dusk

A floodlit stadium at dusk. Spanish football fell silent on Tuesday as fixtures were postponed in tribute to Jesus de Miguel.

Tributes and postponed fixtures

Tenerife announced the news in a statement filled with grief, saying the club was racked with pain and unable to believe what had happened. FC Andorra also published a tribute on Tuesday, and the Spanish Footballers’ Association expressed its deep sorrow at the death of a fellow professional.

The Royal Spanish Football Federation postponed every match due to be played on Tuesday out of respect, including fixtures in the Copa del Rey and the Copa de la Reina. It was a mark of how widely the news had shaken Spanish football, far beyond the two clubs directly involved.

No blame has been assigned in the reporting of the incident beyond the red card shown on the night. The focus of the tributes has been on de Miguel himself, on his family, and on the two squads who witnessed a team-mate and an opponent collapse on the pitch.

A striker who helped Tenerife back up

De Miguel was born in Madrid in 1996 and spent much of his career in the lower leagues of Spanish football before joining Tenerife from Castellon ahead of the 2025-26 campaign. He signed a three-year contract and made an immediate impact, scoring 11 goals in 29 games last season as Tenerife earned promotion back to the Segunda Division.

That promotion season made him a valued part of the Tenerife squad, and his death at 30 has cut short a career that had finally reached the second tier of Spanish football. For Tenerife supporters, the goals he scored on the way up will now stand as his lasting contribution to the club.

Spanish football will remember 3 November 2026 as a day of mourning. For more international sports coverage, visit Watan News.
