China Deepens Southeast Asia Ties as Wang Yi Meets Regional Officials

China has moved to deepen its engagement with Southeast Asia, with Foreign Minister Wang Yi holding separate talks on Tuesday with officials from Thailand, Laos and Myanmar. The meetings, confirmed in statements from China’s foreign ministry, centred on regional cooperation, political stability and shared security concerns, as Beijing seeks closer partnerships with its southern neighbours at a time of political strain across the region.

The discussions covered some of Southeast Asia’s most pressing challenges, from Myanmar’s long-running internal conflict to the rapid growth of cross-border scam networks.

FAKTA

  • Who met: Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi held separate meetings with officials from Thailand, Laos and Myanmar on Tuesday, 3 November 2026.
  • Myanmar focus: Beijing said it supports Myanmar’s government in achieving political reconciliation and in stabilising the situation and developing the economy.
  • Thailand focus: China and Thailand agreed to strengthen joint efforts against gambling and telecommunications fraud.
  • The scam networks: illegal call centres operating along Thailand’s borders with Myanmar and Cambodia, often staffed by trafficked workers, targeting victims through phone and online scams.
  • Myanmar conflict background: civil war since the military coup of 2021; United Nations estimates put the death toll at around 100,000, with more than 3.5 million people displaced.

Support for Myanmar’s reconciliation efforts

Myanmar featured prominently in the talks. The country has been gripped by civil war since the military seized power in 2021, a conflict that has created severe political and humanitarian challenges and displaced millions of people. According to the Chinese foreign ministry, Wang told Myanmar’s side that China backs its government in pursuing political reconciliation, a message that could carry weight as the authorities in Naypyidaw grapple with continuing instability.

The conflict’s spillover has long worried neighbouring states, affecting border security, trade routes and the movement of people across the region.

Joint crackdown on cross-border scam networks

The talks with Thailand turned to a different but fast-growing threat: organised gambling and telecom fraud. China and Thailand have already been working together against illegal call centres clustered near Thailand’s borders with Myanmar and Cambodia. These operations frequently rely on trafficked workers and aim to defraud people through fraudulent calls and online messages, causing financial losses for victims in several countries.

Wang called for stronger joint action on the issue. Regional governments have increasingly treated the scam networks as a shared security problem, since the gangs operate across borders and exploit gaps between national law enforcement systems.

A wider push across Southeast Asia

Taken together, the meetings point to a broader Chinese effort to reinforce ties across Southeast Asia, combining political dialogue, economic partnership and security cooperation. Further meetings in the coming weeks will show how far the commitments made on Tuesday translate into joint action on the ground.
