Fiji will host the preparatory meeting before COP31, and Tuvalu a leaders’ event, from 5 to 8 October 2026, in partnership with Australia, the COP31 Australia-Pacific page says.
A second passage on the same page says Australia and the Pacific will host the Pre-COP in Fiji and a leaders’ event in Fiji and Tuvalu across those dates. The gatherings should help shape priorities for COP31 and present Pacific-led climate solutions. Türkiye will host COP31 in Antalya from 9 to 20 November 2026. Australia will serve as president of negotiations, working with Türkiye as COP31 president on targets, rules and ambition. The page says the conference will focus on delivery, turning Paris Agreement commitments into practical outcomes.
The case set out on the page
Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Paris Agreement meet each year at the Conference of the Parties, which the page calls the world’s most important climate meeting. Collective action, the page says, is working. Before the Paris Agreement the world was heading for around 4°C of warming. Today the path is closer to 2.6°C. Clean energy is described as cheap, reliable and the fastest-growing source of global investment, after earlier COPs set a transition moving, technology enabled it and economics is now driving it. COP31 should add momentum, help Parties implement faster and keep the 1.5°C goal within reach.
Australia’s aims on the page are a faster global shift to clean energy, more finance and investment, a larger green economy and a higher place for Pacific priorities. The approach to the talks is described as transparent, inclusive and consultative, shaped by First Nations knowledge from 65,000 years of caring for Country. With Pacific island countries, Türkiye and Australia are to elevate a COP31 Action Agenda, including a session on the climate-finance needs of small island developing states. Through the COP31 Pacific Partnership, Pacific voices should stay central: the 1.5°C goal, access to climate finance, the ocean’s place in the climate and in resilience, and Pacific leadership.
