Greenfield Community College in Massachusetts has been named a 2026 clean energy workforce champion, receiving the Energy Leadership Award from the Alliance for Climate Transition (ACT) for its leadership in opening clean energy careers to local residents. The award was presented on 8 October at ACT’s annual Energy Leadership Gala at the Museum of Science in Boston, following a nomination by the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center (MassCEC).

Why the college was honoured

The award recognises organisations and individuals making significant contributions to the clean energy and climate technology transition across the northeastern United States. GCC’s Workforce Development team was nominated by MassCEC for building training programmes that prepare workers for the region’s growing clean energy workforce needs.

Free training and wraparound support

According to the award announcement, MassCEC grant funding has helped GCC build a suite of clean energy and climate-critical training initiatives over the past three years that are completely free to area residents. Beyond free tuition, the funding has supported laboratory modernisation and the training of industry experts as classroom instructors. The college also provides wraparound student support, including transportation coordination, free on-campus meals and referrals to community housing and food assistance.

Kristin Cole, GCC’s vice president of workforce development, said the college’s goal is to make sure new clean energy career opportunities are accessible to everyone, adding that GCC works closely with employers and community partners to develop training programmes that give people the skills and credentials they need for these growing fields.
