North Korea has test-fired a newly designed air-defence missile system and carried out a separate long-range cruise missile drill, state media reported on Thursday, in the latest show of its advancing weapons programme.

Both exercises took place on Wednesday, according to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA). The report gave Pyongyang’s first detailed account of launches South Korea’s military had detected earlier the same day, when it said several missiles were fired from the Sondok area on North Korea’s east coast toward the sea.

FAKTA: North Korea air-defence missile test

  • What happened: North Korea tested a newly developed air-defence missile system and staged a long-range cruise missile strike drill on Wednesday, 4 November 2026.
  • Reported by: the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), in a report carried on Thursday, 5 November 2026.
  • Air-defence test: the system was checked for technical performance and reliability, including its new materials, multiple guidance modes and ability to identify and track targets.
  • Cruise missile drill: a sub-unit of the long-range strategic cruise missile force in the east struck a simulated airport target.
  • South Korea’s account: Seoul said multiple missiles were fired from the Sondok area toward the sea; it was the fourth North Korean weapons launch in a month.
  • Not disclosed: KCNA gave no ranges, flight paths, launch locations or details of the targets used.

What the tests involved

KCNA said the air-defence test confirmed the technical specifications and reliability of the new system. Officials said the trial verified the quality of newly developed materials and the system’s ability to work through several guidance modes, and its capacity to detect, identify and track targets.

In the separate exercise, a unit of the long-range strategic cruise missile force carried out a live-fire drill against a simulated airfield in the country’s eastern region. KCNA described the drill as part of efforts to modernise North Korea’s weapons systems and improve their reliability in combat. Images released by state media showed stages of both tests.

Analysts note Russian resemblance

Defence analysts studying the released images said the cruise missile appeared to be carrying a cluster warhead. Shin Jong-woo, secretary general of the Korea Defense and Security Forum, said the new air-defence missile, which was first unveiled in November 2025, appeared to have a guidance section resembling that of Russia’s S-400 surface-to-air missile system.

The observations are preliminary, based on photographs rather than official technical data, which Pyongyang has not published. KCNA did not say how far the missiles flew or where exactly they were launched from.

Regional context

The tests were the fourth North Korean weapons launch in a month, and they come at a time of continued tension on the Korean Peninsula. South Korea’s military said it was analysing the launches together with the United States to establish the types of missiles involved.

Regional governments watch North Korea’s weapons development closely, and each new test draws fresh attention to its missile programme. Further coverage of regional security can be found on Watan News.
