Ozone Secretariat ties World Ozone Day to a cooler planet

The Ozone Secretariat is marking World Ozone Day on 16 September 2026 under the theme “Global action for a cooler planet.” The campaign page adds a second line on 10 years of sustainable cooling under the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol.

The page says the theme marks the Protocol and the impact of the Amendment ten years after adoption. It says the Protocol has shown that science-based policy, universal participation, strong compliance, dedicated financing and effective partnerships can deliver real and measurable results. Through those elements, it says, the treaty has protected the ozone layer and helped countries and industries move to safer, more sustainable alternatives, while supporting economic development.

The Amendment, the page says, has widened that work by driving a global phase-down of HFCs, described there as potent greenhouse gases, and by speeding a shift to more efficient and sustainable cooling. Over the past decade, it says, this has shown how development priorities can be met through energy-efficient technology, stronger industrial capacity and innovation in cooling.

The secretariat says the two instruments, taken together, show that cooling the planet is possible when countries act collectively, industries innovate responsibly, and partnerships turn commitments into action, with benefits for the climate, economies and people.

What is being published

The theme appears in Arabic, Chinese, Spanish, French and Russian as well as English. A logo on the page reads “THE KIGALI AMENDMENT 2016-2026” and “10 years of the Kigali Amendment,” in the six official UN languages. The secretariat is offering A1 posters and a campaign video, listing Arabic, Spanish and Chinese versions. It also points readers to the Secretary-General’s statements on this year’s campaign, with further language versions marked “coming soon.”

Country headings include Angola, with a programme and a workshop programme, Brazil with awareness materials, and Spain with a brochure for Ozone Day celebrations. Antigua and Barbuda, Armenia, Lebanon, Nigeria and Qatar are listed too.

UNEP says an estimated 1 million plastic bottles are bought every minute. It gives no yearly total, no daily total and no tonnage for bottle waste.
