Barcelona is about to become the world capital of urban ideas. The Smart City Expo World Congress 2026 opens on Tuesday, 3 November, at Fira de Barcelona’s Gran Via venue, bringing together 1,000 cities, more than 25,000 attendees, over 1,000 exhibitors and 600 speakers for three days of debate on how cities can meet climate, housing and mobility challenges with solutions that already work.

Organised by Fira de Barcelona, the congress runs until Thursday, 5 November, under the theme “Urban Solutions, Real Impact”. Its message is deliberately practical: the focus is on moving from vision to action, with technologies and policies that cities can adopt now rather than promises for a distant future.

Seven tracks, one urban agenda

The congress programme is structured around seven tracks: Enabling Technologies, Energy and Environment, Mobility, Governance and Economy, Living and Inclusion, Infrastructure and Buildings, and Blue Economy. Together they span digital transformation, artificial intelligence, green energy, governance and social equity.

For climate watchers, the Energy and Environment track is the centre of gravity. The organisers present the event as a showcase of technologies already addressing urgent urban challenges such as climate change, housing affordability and mobility — three pressures that now shape daily life in cities on every continent.

Housing takes centre stage

This year’s edition places a special focus on housing, described by the organisers as one of the most pressing challenges facing cities worldwide. The congress hosts the first edition of HOWS Barcelona, a new housing world summit covering urban planning and land policy, market regulation, social and affordable housing, and the renovation and reuse of buildings.

A Housing Mayors Meeting and Roundtable, led by Barcelona mayor Jaume Collboni, will bring municipal leaders together to discuss responses to the housing crisis. Former Paris mayor Anne Hidalgo, Global Ambassador of the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy, headlines the political programme, joined by mayors from four continents, including Andre Dickens of Atlanta, Haris Doukas of Athens, Giuseppe Sala of Milan, Gergely Karácsony of Budapest, Daryl Barron of Dublin and Yvonne Aki-Sawyer of Freetown.

Five events, one week in Barcelona

The expo runs jointly with Tomorrow.Mobility World Congress, Tomorrow.Blue Economy, HOWS Barcelona, the Barcelona Deep Tech Summit and the Barcelona Cybersecurity Congress, consolidating Barcelona as a meeting point for urban innovation this November.

Country and city pavilions include those from Argentina, Austria, Barcelona, Belgium, Berlin, China, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Hamburg, Italy, Japan, Las Rozas de Madrid, the Republic of Korea, Mexico, Tokyo and the United States. Futurist Nikolas Badminton delivers the main keynote address.

Why cities matter for the climate

The Barcelona gathering comes just one week before the COP31 climate conference opens in Antalya, Türkiye, on 9 November, with a World Leaders’ Summit scheduled for 11–12 November. While COP31 negotiators will debate national pledges, Barcelona’s message is that much of the implementation happens in cities — in how homes are heated and built, how people move, and how energy and water systems are run.

That link gives the expo a practical role in the climate calendar: it is where city governments, companies and experts compare notes on what is already working, before the world’s governments meet to agree on what comes next.
