EU launches ‘Our Climate – Our Community’ to raise climate awareness across the Mediterranean

A new European Union-backed campaign, Our Climate – Our Community, has gone live with a mission to strengthen climate awareness across the Mediterranean. The campaign’s new website turns science, education and inclusive storytelling into local action — empowering women, young people and local communities along the Mediterranean’s shores, with a special focus on its southern and eastern coasts.

Why “Our Climate – Our Community” starts with awareness

The campaign treats awareness not as an end in itself but as the first step toward resilience. Its website offers clear, accessible explanations of how climate change is reshaping water, food, nature and daily life around the Mediterranean — and what communities can do about it, together.

Visitors can take a short quiz, “Is Your Climate Changing?”, to see how climate change may already be showing up where they live. A “Teach & Facilitate” section provides ready-to-use activities and tools for educators working with young people across the region, while a “Communicating Climate Effectively” toolkit gives journalists and communicators evidence-based guidance grounded in the latest climate communication research. A “Get Involved” directory helps people connect with civil society groups, networks and initiatives active in their country — from climate action and community empowerment to education, youth engagement, tourism and cultural heritage.

A Mediterranean on the front line of climate change

The focus is deliberate. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change identifies the Mediterranean as a climate change hotspot — a region where warming is projected to exceed the global average, bringing fiercer heatwaves, deepening water scarcity and longer drought seasons.

According to the campaign’s own heat explainer, the intensity of heat during heatwaves in the Eastern Mediterranean is now on average about seven times higher than in the mid-20th century. Across coastal cities from Beirut to Alexandria and Tunis, heatwaves are no longer exceptional events; they temporarily reshape how people live, limiting work, schooling and play for much of the day.

Backed by the EU until November 2027

Our Climate – Our Community is funded by the European Union through the WES-BCA project — Water and Environment Support, Biodiversity and Climate Action in the EU’s southern neighbourhood — and will run until November 2027. It works with governments, civil society, EU Delegations and regional partners to build stronger connections and support collective action.

The campaign supports the implementation of the Pact for the Mediterranean, launched in November 2025, and the Mediterranean Strategy on Education for Sustainable Development and its Action Plan — anchoring awareness work in the region’s agreed policy frameworks.

FAKTA

  • What: Our Climate – Our Community — a regional campaign to strengthen climate awareness across the Mediterranean; its website is now live.
  • Who: Funded by the EU through the WES-BCA project; run with governments, civil society, EU Delegations and regional partners.
  • Focus: Women, young people and local communities — especially along the Mediterranean’s southern and eastern shores.
  • Tools: Explainers, a “Is Your Climate Changing?” quiz, educator resources, a climate communication toolkit for journalists, and a Get Involved directory.
  • Duration: The campaign runs until November 2027.

Conclusion

Awareness alone will not cool a warming sea — but without it, resilience plans land on dry ground. By pairing verified science with storytelling and practical tools, Our Climate – Our Community is betting that an informed Mediterranean is a more resilient one. With COP31 set for Antalya on the Mediterranean coast this November, the region’s climate conversation is only getting louder.
