Canadian poet and essayist Anne Carson has won the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature, the Swedish Academy announced in Stockholm on Thursday, October 8.

The 76-year-old was honoured, the Academy said, “for her bold and inventive oeuvre that, in playful dialogue with the classical tradition, has created new forms for contemporary literature.”

FAKTA

  • Laureate: Anne Carson, 76, Canadian poet and essayist
  • Award: 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature, announced October 8, 2026, in Stockholm
  • Prize money: 12 million Swedish crowns (about $1.2 million)
  • Citation: for her bold and inventive oeuvre, in playful dialogue with the classical tradition
  • Known for: Autobiography of Red (1998), The Beauty of the Husband, Eros the Bittersweet, Float (2016)
  • Award ceremony: December 10, 2026, in Stockholm

A surprise call in Iceland

Carson learned of the prize while in Iceland, where she has spent considerable time in recent years and has held citizenship since 2022. Ingrid Carlberg, the permanent secretary of the Swedish Academy, said the new laureate was “very taken by surprise.”

“All she had time to tell me was that she is for the moment in Iceland, where she is listening to the wind,” Carlberg said of the brief phone call.

The Nobel Prize organisation shared a photograph of a surprised Carson in her kitchen in Reykjavík shortly after the announcement.

Anne Carson: a bold and inventive literary voice

Born in Toronto, Carson is celebrated for writing that refuses easy categorisation, moving fluidly between verse and prose, translation and reimagination. Her classical training — she earned three degrees from the University of Toronto and taught the classics at Princeton, Emory and McGill — runs through everything she writes.

The Academy noted that “almost all her literary production has centred upon the intersection between the philologist’s obsession with words and the poet’s desire for new meaning,” and praised her translations from Classical Greek as works that stand on their own.

Works that crossed genres

Carson first reached a wide audience with Autobiography of Red (1998), a novel in verse inspired by fragments of a Greek myth. The Beauty of the Husband tells a marriage story in 29 tangos, while Eros the Bittersweet and Float (2016) — 22 chapbooks that can be read in any order — cemented her reputation as one of the most inventive writers of her generation.

Her 2019 performance piece Norma Jeane Baker of Troy blends the stories of Helen of Troy in Euripides’ Helen with that of Marilyn Monroe.

Following recent laureates

Recent recipients of the literature prize include Hungarian novelist László Krasznahorkai, South Korean author Han Kang and Norwegian author and playwright Jon Fosse.

The prize will be presented on December 10.
