Russian ballistic missiles struck Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, in the early hours of Saturday, damaging apartment buildings and a kindergarten and injuring two people, city officials said. The overnight barrage came only hours after President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned that Moscow was preparing a fresh wave of attacks on the country’s energy network, bridges and other key infrastructure.

FAKTA

  • What happened: Russian forces fired several waves of ballistic missiles at Kyiv overnight on 6–7 November 2026.
  • Casualties: Two people injured in the capital; a third hurt in a separate drone strike in the surrounding Kyiv region.
  • Damage: Apartment buildings damaged in the Solomianskyi district; a building housing a kindergarten hit; a fire broke out at a non-residential building.
  • Warning: Ukraine’s Air Force reported at least six ballistic missiles heading towards the capital shortly before 11 p.m. on Friday.
  • Context: Three days before US-led talks in Abu Dhabi between Ukrainian and Russian negotiators on ending the four-and-a-half-year war.

Missiles struck through the night

Ukraine’s Air Force said it had detected at least six ballistic missiles heading for Kyiv shortly before 11 p.m. local time on Friday, prompting air raid alerts across the capital and several other regions. A fresh wave followed shortly after 1 a.m. on Saturday, with further blasts at around 3 a.m.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said debris from the attack struck a five-storey apartment building in a western district, damaging part of its facade. The facade of another residential building was also damaged. He urged residents to remain in shelters while the attack was under way.

Damage across the capital and beyond

Much of the damage was reported in the Solomianskyi district, where a five-storey residential building was hit and windows were shattered at another apartment block. A fire broke out at a non-residential building in the same district, and a building housing a kindergarten was also damaged.

Outside the capital, a separate Russian jet-powered drone struck a home in the Brovary district of Kyiv region, setting it on fire. Regional Governor Tymur Tkachenko said rescuers pulled a man from the rubble. He was taken to hospital with burns and multiple shrapnel wounds.

Attack comes days before peace talks

The strike followed a warning from President Zelenskyy that Russian forces were preparing new attacks on energy targets, bridges across the Dnipro River and other civilian infrastructure. Ukraine has faced repeated strikes on its power grid as winter approaches.

The timing adds pressure to diplomacy. Ukrainian and Russian negotiators are expected to meet in Abu Dhabi in three days for US-led talks aimed at finding a resolution to the war. The previous round of negotiations took place in February. The attack underlined the security challenges facing Ukraine even as those talks approach. More world news is available on Watan News.
