Germany arrests ex-domestic intelligence chief for alleged spying
Share this story

Former German foreign intelligence chief August Hanning has been detained on suspicion of espionage, treason and obtaining classified information for a foreign power, the newspaper Bild reported on Tuesday, according to Reuters. Hanning, whose tenure as head of the BND ended in 2005, is alleged to have bought secret information from a former employee of the agency and intended to sell it on through his consulting activities.

Editor’s note: the headline’s reference to a “domestic” intelligence chief is imprecise. The BND is Germany’s foreign intelligence service, which Hanning led from 1998 to 2005.

Key facts

  • Who: August Hanning, former head of Germany’s Federal Intelligence Service (BND) — the country’s foreign intelligence agency — from 1998 to 2005.
  • Allegation: Detained on suspicion of espionage, treason and obtaining classified information for a foreign power.
  • Source: First reported by Bild on Tuesday, 6 October; reported internationally by Reuters. Neither the BND nor the federal prosecutor’s office had responded to requests for comment at the time of publication.
  • Alleged scheme: Hanning is alleged to have bought secret information from a former BND employee and planned to sell it on as part of his consulting work.
  • Trigger: The investigation was launched after the discovery of an alleged leak of intelligence reports intended for the chancellery, Bild reported.

What Bild reported

According to Bild’s reporting, prosecutors allege that Hanning obtained secret information from a former employee of the foreign intelligence agency and intended to sell it on through his consulting activities. The alleged conduct raises the possibility of a serious breach at the heart of Germany’s intelligence apparatus, given Hanning’s former role at the top of the agency.

Bild further reported that the investigation began after an alleged leak of intelligence reports intended for the chancellery was discovered, prompting prosecutors to move against the former spy chief.

No official confirmation yet

Neither the BND nor the office of Germany’s federal prosecutor immediately responded to Reuters’ requests for comment. The case therefore rests, for now, on Bild’s reporting rather than on officially confirmed charges — a distinction that matters as the story develops.

What happens next in the Hanning case

The investigation is ongoing. Prosecutors have not disclosed for whom the information was allegedly obtained, and it remains to be seen whether the federal prosecutor will confirm the detention.
