Freyr Energy, India’s second-largest residential rooftop solar company, has named cricket star Rohit Sharma as its first-ever brand ambassador and launched a nationwide campaign, “Solar Ho, Toh Freyr Ho!”, to encourage Indian households to switch to rooftop solar power. The campaign, announced on 17 October 2026, also features a new ad film, “Rishta Pakka”, starring Sharma in a humour-led story about solar power, government subsidies and the benefits of going solar.

The appointment was first announced in early October 2026, and the company has now rolled out the full campaign across the country. Freyr Energy says the campaign is built around one simple idea: installing rooftop solar is a 30-year decision, and it deserves a company that keeps delivering year after year. Why Rohit Sharma?

Rohit Sharma, India’s World Cup-winning captain, is one of the most recognised faces in world cricket, with nearly two decades at the highest level of the international game. Freyr Energy says his reputation for consistency and trust made him the natural choice as the face of its consumer campaign.

“Protecting the environment has been close to my heart for years. Rooftop solar gives families a chance to do their bit for the planet, and it is important to have a partner you can trust for the journey. That is what drew me to Freyr Energy. I am happy to be part of their campaign, encouraging more families to embrace solar and choose a cleaner, more sustainable future,” Sharma said.

The company draws a direct parallel between the cricketer’s career and its own promise to customers. “Our aim has always been to raise the bar for what Indian homeowners can expect from rooftop solar, not just on installation day but across the 30-year life of their system. Rohit has spent his career doing exactly that in cricket, which made him the natural choice as our first brand ambassador,” said Saurabh Marda, Co-founder and Managing Director of Freyr Energy.

Radhika Choudary, Co-founder and Director of Freyr Energy, added: “When a family puts solar on its roof, they are trusting a company for the next 30 years. That company has to show up every time and stand behind the family’s decision long after the system is switched on. ‘Solar Ho, Toh Freyr Ho!’ says that in five words, and no one says it better than Rohit.”

About Freyr Energy

Founded in 2014 by Saurabh Marda and Radhika Choudary, Freyr Energy has grown into India’s second-largest residential rooftop solar company under the government’s PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana. The company says it has designed, financed, installed and serviced more than 24,000 solar systems for homes and businesses across over 40 cities, bringing system design, installation, financing assistance and technology-enabled customer support under one roof.

The company says it has introduced several industry firsts, including the Freyr Energy customer app, self-cleaning solar systems and solar experience centres, and points to the expected 30-year operating life of solar systems as the reason long-term service matters as much as installation.

The PM Surya Ghar scheme

The campaign arrives as India’s residential rooftop solar market is expanding fast. Under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, eligible households can receive government subsidy support of up to ₹78,000, while financing options at low and competitive interest rates further reduce the upfront cost of switching to solar. Freyr Energy says the scheme is bringing millions of Indian families to rooftop solar for the first time — and that makes choosing a trustworthy long-term partner, not just a low price, the real decision for families.

Why celebrity green ambassadors matter

Climate organisations have long used well-known ambassadors to turn complex issues into everyday action, and sports stars are among the most effective: their fans trust them, and a familiar face can make solar panels feel as normal as a cricket match. By putting a World Cup-winning captain at the centre of a nationwide solar campaign, Freyr Energy is betting that stardom can accelerate one of the most direct climate actions a household can take — generating its own clean electricity on its own roof.

Conclusion

With the “Solar Ho, Toh Freyr Ho!” campaign now live across India, the Rohit Sharma partnership shows how the renewable energy industry is borrowing a page from the climate movement’s ambassador playbook: let a trusted, recognisable face carry the message, and let households discover that going solar is simpler — and better supported — than they thought.
